How To Obtain CFP®
CFP® training is available from several institutions. Two of the most well-known are The College for Financial Planning in Greenwood Village, CO, and The American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. Both providers offer distance-learning programs. Once you complete the CFP® certification curriculum through The College for Financial Planning, The American College, or another institution, you must apply to the CFP® Board to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination.
CFP® status is granted to those who pass a comprehensive two-day, ten-hour examination designed to mimic the multiple demands of the client-planner relationship. Biannual license renewal and continuing education are required. CFP® candidates must have three years of financial planning experience, as well as a college degree or certificate from an approved educational program.
Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and federally registered CFP (with flame design) in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board's initial and ongoing certification requirements.
